Automating the vertical Z axes on cartesian systems poses unique challenges, and many electric linear-actuator drive types introduce design drawbacks when used on such axes. In contrast, omega belt drives are particularly well suited to automating cartesian systems’ Z axes for processes in machine-tool, palletizing, and assembly applications. Called omega belt drives for the way the belt makes an Ω-shaped serpentine path through three pulleys; these offer several advantages for vertical applications.
